GRAPHIC DESIGN AS MODERN ART, CONTEMPORARY ART, OR CONCEPTUAL ART

To some of you, this may seem a little presumptuous… but some of these posters—in my opinion—should fall into the category of conceptual art, based upon standards and definitions set by many contemporary art authorities. Text and images used for advertising wouldn’t necessary fall into a fine art category. But, in a different context, combining text and imagery is an acceptable conceptual art form for communicating complex ideas.

As an artist, I’ll take the same liberty as Marcel Duchamp did when he used a urinal as art, or bicycle wheel in a stool; then declared them to be ‘ready-mades. I’ve determined that these posters should be designated as contemporary fine art, or conceptual art.  So, the art critics can put that in their MoMA pipe and smoke it.

For some of these posters I use the pseudonym ‘Lefty Green’ as the poster designer.  Sometimes anonymity is the best way to go.  I’ve had a few threats because of my comments on controversial blogs and social media.
