GRAPHIC DESIGN AS MODERN ART, CONTEMPORY ART, OR CONCEPTUAL ART
To some of you, this may seem a little presumptuous… but some of these posters—in my mind—should fall into the category of conceptual art, based upon standards and definitions set by many contemporary art authorities. Text and images used in advertising wouldn’t necessary fall into a fine art category. But, in a different context, combining text and imagery is an acceptable conceptual art form for communicating complex ideas.
As an artist, I’ll take the same liberty as Marcel Duchamp did when he used a urinal as art, or bicycle wheel in a stool. I have determined that these posters are contemporary fine art, or conceptual art. So put that in your MoMA pipe and smoke it.
Some of these posters have the pseudonym ‘Lefty Green’ as the poster designer. Sometimes anonymity is the best way to go. I’ve had a few threats because of my comments on controversial blogs and social media.
